Preparing the Cane Slip

Select the nicest round pieces of cane you have, if they have any damages on the surface, try to cut your slips leaving these bits out, and cut your tubes of cane into 4-1.2" lengths, from 25.00mm or 1.00" diameter for concert reeds and 7/8" for flat pitch reeds.

Now you are ready to cannon the cane into strips, take a craft knife or similar, hold it in your non writing hand and with the aid of your other, tap on the handle until the cane splits through.

Repeat this procedure until you have several strips measuring just under 5/8"in width for concert reeds and just under 1/2" for flat reeds.

Then with the aid of 120 grit, sand the edges of the cane at a slight angle on both sides, until you have a finished width of about 13.20mm for concert reeds, and 11.20mm for flat reeds.
